colleagues were discourteous, I decline and call attention to the fact that, as regards Mr. Jacken, he had, although much my junior in age and professional standing, been placed over me. It was scarcely to be expected that I could quietly submit myself to his irritating and offensive bearing towards me.

  1. With regard to the charge of drawing up instructions for warders which did not accord with the activist, I take this opportunity of stating that this charge was never brought against me, and I could, with a view to replying to it, have shown the government that I was prepared with a complete answer. I respectfully submit the enclosed copy of a letter (40 h. 1889 57 (PPO)) - a portion of which was my answer to that charge, which would have been. In my letter of the 9th November last, I respectfully called His Excellency's attention to the computations contained in D. Jordan's letter of the 25th October last, but as no notice was taken of my request, I concluded that His Excellency looked upon Dr. Jordan's letter as unworthy of serious attention, indeed it was.

This charge, however, appears to have had considerable weight with the Secretary of State in his decision, and I would respectfully ask for his reconsideration of this matter, as it seems to have led to the deprivation of a portion of my pension, and what is of even greater importance to me, reflects upon my character.

I observe that a Superintendent will be appointed in England.

I have the honour to be our most obedient servant,

H. H. CD. Woren, Superintendent

Forwarded to Acting Colonial Secretary,

Spottiswoode, 29.4.89
